Auto-Mate Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Does Auto-Mate work with Outlook Express?

No, Auto-Mate does not work with any version of Microsoft Outlook Express. Outlook Express is the free email program that comes with Internet Explorer. It does not possess the ability to integrate add-in programs such as Auto-Mate or Traylook. It is intended as a basic email client.

What versions of Outlook are required for Auto-Mate?

Auto-Mate requires Microsoft Outlook 2000/2002/2003. It is part of the Microsoft Office suite of products. Auto-Mate is a "add-in" created specifically to integrate with Outlook. These add-ins are currently supported in Outlook 2000 or greater.

How do I know what version of Outlook I am running?

To determine you current Outlook version, select "About..." from the Help menu of Outlook. This will identify the current version.

Does Auto-Mate use or interfere with standard Outlook rules?

No, Auto-Mate rules do not interfere with standard Outlook rules in any way. They are maintained seperately in a custom database. In fact, Auto-Mate rules can work in conjunction with standard Outlook rules!

Is there a way to backup the rules?

Yes, you can import and export rules from the Auto-Mate Options window located under the Outlook Tools Menu. Select Tools->Options, then click the Auto-Mate tab.

Can I define a rule to move messages from multiple senders or recipients?

Yes, you can use just the domain portion to filter all users in a particular domain, i.e. @myfreemail.com. You can also specify more than one email address in the From, To, and Cc fields, seperated with semicolons (;). When more than one email address is specified, the match type is logical OR, i.e. it will match address1 or address2 or address3, etc.

Auto-Mate does not start with Outlook anymore.

Ensure that Outlook is configured to run Auto-Mate as a COM Add-in:

  • From the Tools menu of Outlook, select Options.
  • Click the Other tab.
  • Click the Advanced Options button.
  • Click the COM Add-ins button.
  • Insure that Auto-Mate Add-in is listed and is checked.
  • If Auto-Mate is not listed, click the Add button and browse to the Auto-Mate installation folder and select auto-mate.dll
If that does not work, try the following:
  • From the Help menu of Outlook, select About Microsoft Outlook.
  • Click the Disabled Items button
  • Make sure Auto-Mate is not listed.
  • If so, remove auto-mate from the list.
  • This only works for Outlook 2002 and 2003.

I have entered a rule, but no messages get moved.

Loosen the restrictions on the rule until it works. Use the Preview button on the Rule Manager window to help in this process. For example set the rule to filter on these parameters:

  • From: [blank]
  • Sent To: put in a valid email address (user@domain.com)
  • Cc: [blank]
  • Subject Contains: [blank]
  • Message Contains: [blank]
  • Status: Any
  • Importance: Any
  • Flag Status: Don't Care
  • Only Items That: N/A
  • Message Older Than: Any Time
  • Source Folder: Inbox
  • Destination Folder: Some other Folder You Choose
Then save the rule, click and select it in the Rule Manager list and click the preview button and see if it lists any messages. If so, you can add back in restrictions until it fails. This should help identify which part of the rule is causing the problem.
